Chapter 20

Testing and Travel

I got Ralph to introduce me to the owner of the gym he trained at, and I mojo'd the guy into letting me in after hours one night. I wanted to see what I could do.

As a human, I had been pretty average. I wasn't weak, but I wasn't terribly strong either. I could bench press around 150 lbs and squat about 225-ish lbs. That was my baseline when I hit the gym, and I wanted to see what I could do now.

The gym had only free weights, no machines, so I found a bar and added weights; one fifty-pound disk on each side, plus the bar weighed fifty-five pounds by itself. That was my max as a human when I was in college, the last time I had lifted weights or been remotely in decent shape before becoming a vampire, at least.

I lay on the bench and looked up at the bar. I knew I'd be able to lift it, but I also knew I would have been a little intimidated to try this without a spotter once.

Taking a deep breath, I lifted the bar off the stand.

It felt like nothing.

I did a couple of reps, then put the bar back and got up to gather more weights. I loaded it down with 1000 pounds of weight. I was afraid to put any more than that for fear it would bend the bar.

I lay down on the bench again; I was a little worried this time. I knew I was super strong now, but this was a lot of weight. A quick internet search on my phone told me the world record bench press was around 900 lbs, and there were some claims of 1000 or more; however, those were outside the Guinness Book.

I stopped hesitating and lifted. It was a strain. I'm not denying that, but I could bench it and do fifteen reps before I decided to stop. I didn't really get tired as a vampire, but overuse of my abilities would burn blood.

With a sigh, I returned the weights and cleaned up after myself. I could have gone higher with the weights, maybe a lot higher, if I had burned some blood. I was definitely outside the human realm in terms of strength.

I could have tried deadlifting, but there wouldn't have been a point to it. I was definitely beyond human standards, and the bar couldn't hold enough weight to challenge me. It would have bent or broken long before I hit my limit.

I decided to test myself during my travels. I would see if I could find heavy things to lift to get a feel for my capabilities.
